COCKTAIL HOUR
Here’s a great place to begin to set the tone for the evening. Whether you’d prefer the smooth sounds of some classical favorites like Bach or Beethoven, the elegance of Ella Fitzgerald, or some soft rock like John Mayer and Five For Fighting, we can guide you in the right direction for the musical genres you and your guests would enjoy during the mix and mingle stage of your reception.
GRAND ENTRANCE
Lights, cameras (plenty of those), action! It’s time for your family, your wedding party, and you – the happy couple to be formally introduced! If you choose to go with music during introductions, it’s yet another way to show off your personality with something that is either upbeat, funny, elegant, quirky, or whatever might fit into your overall vision for your wedding.
I’ve entertained at weddings where each person had their own song to be introduced to, giving each person their own “flavor” to choose from. Here’s a quick offering of some popular choices for introductions:
- Black Eyed Peas-I Gotta Feeling
- Sirius-Alan Parsons Project (sometimes better known as the Chicago Bulls entrance music)
- Get Ready For This-2 Unlimited
- Welcome to the Jungle-Guns N’ Roses
- College/Pro Sports Team Fight Songs
Toasts
Perhaps your friend is a huge Indiana Jones fan (true story) and he’s giving the Best Man speech. Why not have your DJ play Raiders of the Lost Ark as he’s being introduced to give the speech? Or maybe the Father of the Bride is a huge ZZ Top fan; How about a little Sharp Dressed Man as a compliment to his attire for the day? These are just two examples that can help you personalize your wedding in a memorable way.
Dinner Music
When someone mentions “dinner music” it always sparks an interesting conversation about what works and what doesn’t when your guests are enjoying their meal. Similar to cocktail hour music, it’s a great way for you to personally influence the evening and its proceedings through subtle music offerings of your choosing. Perhaps your significant other takes delight in Kenny G, Boney James, Dave Koz and other smooth jazz artists (I also happen to enjoy this genre).
In the chance your wedding has a theme or if you just want a cool vibe during dinner we can incorporate all your ideas with just a little bit of planning beforehand, even if it’s something for your mother-in-law, who enjoys the Beach Boys and Jimmy Buffett. The possibilities to be creative and unique are endless and can leave your guests impressed with your great taste in music!
Wedding Cake Cutting Songs
It’s now time to cut the gorgeously decorated wedding cake. It’s also time for your photographer, family, and friends to take some amazing pictures! (Expert tip time!) This part of the reception takes a little bit more time than couples realize (Uncle Eli and Aunt Elsie really want that perfect shot of the two of you) so it’s sometimes wise to choose two songs for the cake cutting. Here are some examples to get you started:
- The Sweetest Thing-U2
- Ice Cream-Sarah Mclachlan
- Sugar Sugar-The Archies
- Hit Me With Your Best Shot-Pat Benatar
- How Sweet It Is-James Taylor
Bouquet/Garter Toss/Removal
Whatever you decide to do with these traditional events at a reception, here are some ideas that work:
Bouquet Toss
- Single Ladies-Beyonce
- This One’s For the Girls-Martina Mcbride
- Ladies Night-Kool & The Gang
Garter Removal/Toss
- Another One Bites The Dust-Queen
- Jeopardy Theme-Television Show
- Mission Impossible Theme-Movie Theme
Bouquet/Garter Catcher Dance
- Take My Breath Away-Berlin
- Pretty Woman-Roy Orbison
- Oh Yeah-Yello
Anniversary Dance
This event can serve as a great floor filler early in the night, and is a great way to incorporate all ages and make them feel like a big part of your special day. I’ve worked with couples that have done the research to figure out who has been married the longest on the guest list, and then even went a step further and found out what that couples first dance song was on their wedding day whether it was 25, 30, 35, 40…even 50 years ago. It’s a great moment when the newlyweds and the not-so-newlyweds share their secrets and a dance all at the same time with the rest of the guests watching! Here’s a few songs that always work well for any format of Anniversary Dance you plan on using:
- Through The Years-Kenny Rogers
- 100 Years-Five For Fighting
- Let’s Stay Together-Al Green
- Can’t Help Falling In Love-Elvis Presley
Dollar Dance
The Dollar Dance can be a fun way to individually have a few words with your guests while they dance the night away with you. This dance has ethnic roots from weddings and is especially popular with Polish Americans like myself and my family. Polkas and salsa style dances are common musical themes, but there are other ways to make this event memorable. Choosing some lower tempo songs that are important to you and your significant other can make a great memory. Depending on the size of your wedding, it’s a smart idea to have a handful of songs ready to go for your guests to dance to-but at the same time not too many. Here are some songs that I personally recommend with a mix of slow and fast tempos:
- That’s What Friends are For-Dionne Warwick
- I Will Remember You-Sarah Mclachlan
- Thank You-Dido
- Glamorous-Fergie
- Crazy In Love-Beyonce
- With A Little Help From My Friends-Beatles
Last Dance
Ahh, it’s time for the final big bow that you tie to wrap up your wedding reception. This is a great chance for all of your guests eyes to once again be on you. Here are some songs to get you started:
- Time of Your Life-Green Day
- Friends in Low Places-Garth Brooks
- The Time-Black Eyed Peas
- Faithfully-Journey
- Save the Best for Last-Vanessa Williams
These are just a few ideas from my experiences of over ten years as being a wedding DJ.
